ANTHEM REPORTS HIGHLY PROFITABLE FOURTH QUARTER AND FULL YEAR 2019 EARNINGS

Anthem has reported its 2019 fourth quarter and full year earnings, showing that Anthem continues to be highly profitable.  The earnings reports showed that Anthem’s fourth quarter operating revenue grew 16.4% year over year to $27.1 billion and full year operating revenue grew 12.9% year over year to $103 billion, with full year profits of $5.9 billion.  Anthem attributed the strong growth in operating revenue to higher revenue growth from membership growth across its businesses and rate increases to cover overall cost trends.

Anthem also reported strong membership growth, with 41 million members as of December 31, 2019, an increase of 1.1 million members from December 31, 2018.  Membership growth was driven by its risk-based businesses.  In addition, Anthem reported growth in enrollment in its government businesses, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Adjusted net income for the year was $19.44 per share.

In reporting its earnings, Anthem’s President and CEO Gail K. Boudreaux stated:  “Anthem delivered strong results to close out 2019 featuring the successful launch of IngenioRx, as well as our largest organic risk-based growth in more than a decade.  We have string momentum moving into 2020….”
